Some of you have already heard of, are a volunteer for, or may have used the services of Sacferals in the past. This much needed organization, "Sacramento Feral Resources," is a group of unpaid volunteers who are dedicated to helping improve the lives of feral cats through the practice of T-N-R, mostly in the city of Sacramento and within the surrounding small towns of Sacramento County.
Many Elk Grove residents are unaware that there are no dedicated feral cat trappers on the SacFerals list for our city. Elk Grove animal control cannot do it regularly because there are only 4 employees to serve 160,000 residents. It is well known by local cat rescue groups that the residents of Elk Grove have largely been left to deal with the issue of feral cats on their own, until now. That's where Kitty Karma comes in.
Are you someone who wants to help
T-N-R Elk Grove community cats so that they may have a better life?
Fostering cats and kittens offers one the opporunity to not only give loving compassion and loving generosity, but to experience loving kindness in return from the cat too. In the spring and throughout the summer, KKR has kittens available to foster that were not born to a tame mother in the confines of a home. To further reduce the feral cat population, we remove those kittens under 8 weeks of age born into feral colonies. It is in their foster home where they become socialzed to humans, and many times to dogs too! These special kittens sometimes need extra "taming training" and a longer term foster committment. They require a gentle and nuturing patience, lots of love and play, and ideally more than one person handling them in the home.
If fostering KKR kittens is not for you, we suggest you foster a tame abandoned, stray cat. These cats find their way into our feral colonies while searching for food, safety, and compansionship. Sadly, most of the time they have been 'dumped' by their former family for any number of reasons.
KKR is not yet set up to process cat adoptions so we rely on partnerships with fully established, local cat adoption organizations to place our cats and kittens into loving, permanent homes. For the past 3 years, Fat Kitty City in El Dorado Hills has generously vetted and put up for adoption close to 100 of our Elk Grove Kitty Karma cats, and we highly appreciate their continued kindness.
As Alley Cat Allies says: "Caring for a feral cat colony provides tremendous benefits to caregivers, neighbors, and the cats. Though cats have been living outdoors for over 10,000 years on their own, caregivers can use Alley Cat Allies’ best practices guide to promote the cats’ well-being, improve their relationships with neighbors, and assist the people who live nearby to understand and co-exist with the cats."
As part of T-N-R, Kitty Karma believes that 'managing' the colony of feral cats is just as important as trapping them and getting them fixed. Colony cartakers are the eyes of our organization, and they keep tabs on new cats coming into colonies, pregnant cats, and kittens found in colonies. Without colony caregivers T-N-R would not be possible.

It's a fact. Doing good is good for you. Volunteers say they feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally. Volunteering helps people manage and lower their stress better, and volunteers feel a deeper connection to their community, and to others.
Plus, volunteering is good for your career too. A 2013 LinkedIn survey found that 42% of hiring managers stated they consider volunteer work equivalent to full-time work experience. 20% said they’d hired someone because of their volunteer experience. A lot of job seekers overlook or discount their volunteer experience when writing their resumes but your volunteering could reveal talents in project management, event planning, office work, or other skills that could be useful to employers. You can definitely add you volunteer work for Kitty Karma Refuge to your resme!
